Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Thursday issued orders for the arrest of Bahujan Samaj Party member of Parliament Purshottam Naresh Dwivedi and his three aides after the Crime Branch submitted its preliminary report confirming that they gang raped a 17-year-old Dalit girl in Banda, about 180 km from Lucknow.

Three more persons, including two children, died due to severe cold conditions in Uttar Pradesh, taking the toll in the state this winter to 92. The three persons, including an eight-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl, have died due to the cold in Barabanki district in the last 24 hours, officials said.Cold conditions prevailed in most parts of the state and clouds hovered in many places.Lucknow recorded a minimum temperature of 1.4 degree Celsius on Tuesday morning.

A police sub-inspector was killed and three of his colleagues injured on Wednesday when a violent mob stormed a police outpost at Jamania town in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh.A woman was injured when the police fired at the mob in retaliation. The mob turned violent after it was prevented from staging a protest demonstration against the arrest of Communist Party of India Marxist Leninist activist Manoj Bind in connection with a major theft in a local post office.

A local court in Banda, Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday saw sufficient reason for a prima facie case against ruling Bahujan Samaj Party member of legislative assembly P N Dwivedi, who was accused of raping a minor girl.Taking cognisance of a hand-written statement given by the victim, Banda Civil Judge Pervez Akhtar asked the superintendent of police to investigate the case and submit a report by January 14.The victim, who is 17 years old, was allegedly gang-raped by the MLA.
